Wrapper

A VAST response that points to another VAST URL instead of containing the creative itself.

Wrappers let a demand partner hand off to another server, which can hand off again. Each hop adds latency and a chance of failure. Players enforce a maximum wrapper depth; ad servers follow the chain and report where it broke.
